Cavities in Chicago, IL

Cavities occur when bacteria, usually caused by leaving sugary or acidic foods on your teeth for an extended period of time, begin eating through your tooth’s enamel, leaving a hole in your tooth. Cavities weaken the structural integrity of your tooth by eating through the dentine layer, or the core of your tooth. If a cavity is left untreated, it continues to grow larger and can lead to a broken or chipped tooth. Severe cases of untreated cavities can cause the bacteria to reach the pulp of your tooth, exposing the sensitive nerves of your tooth and causing a need for a root canal. In worst case scenarios, cavities can cause gum disease and tooth loss.

Cavities can result from poor brushing or flossing habits, and they can occur in people of all ages, not just kids! If a person isn’t regularly scheduling a cleaning and checkup with their dentists, cavities can go undetected for months at a time. While cavities are painless at first, if they are left untreated, they can become a very uncomfortable problem.

Regular visits to Archer Dentistry will allow our doctors to spot cavities early on and avoid the severe problems untreated cavities can cause. If you haven’t had a checkup recently, contact us today to schedule an appointment!
